A NEW CITY STAGE

BITPARK is intended to serve as a symbol and stage for the new identity of the city.  Placed in the harbour, it embodies the contemporary aspirations of the city and its renewed connection to the water.

INTRO

1   MARITIME HERITAGE

The ideal convergence of land and sea, providing adequate trade and farming to sustain a city.  The water being the connecting force in the community and local identity.

2   THE SURGE OF INDUSTRY

Mass growth of cities and the emergence of an industrial takeover of the harbour creates a barrier between the city and its link to blue space.

3   CITIES UNTO THEMSELVES

As growth continues, a greater detachment and remoulding of previous identity emerges through a continued focus on industry and city alone.

  A CHANGE IN FOCUS

A resurgence of maritime importance is revived and the city turns its focus to the possibilities of the water. City development seeks further connection with the harbour.

THE BALANCING ACT

THE NEXT STEP

How to create public interest in engaging and reinvigorating its own identity within its renewed waters?

1   DE-CONSTRUCTING PUBLIC SPACE

The Public Space takes many forms in the city. What defines it is not a single function, but a diversity of functions that serve the diversity of activities and users of the city.

2   ANALYSING PUBLIC CULTURE

With culture ever-evolving, Public spaces are often a symbol of the city itself.   the diverse activities of the city which play out in them, speak of a collective public culture and identity.

RE-IMAGINING THE PUBLIC SPACE

How can we unbox the public space and bring public culture back to the water?

 (BOTANIC)

 HARBOUR BATH

The inclusion of climate screens and terrain plug-ins make a variety of temperature regulated environments possible. A tropical bath in the heart of a Scandinavian harbour is not out of the question.

INSPIRED BY THE WATER

INHABITING THE HARBOUR

 ISLANDS OF ACTIVITY:

Inspiring interest, curiosity and water activation for both, recreation and aquatic urban farming.

 BOARD-WALK:

Engages with the water by jetting out into it, while creating a dialogue between city and water.

 BUFFER ZONES:

The boundaries between city and water can be re-defined, merged and reprogrammed to serve as productive, social and environmentally responsive spaces in the city

 BRIDGE:

Links may be established connecting parts of the city that before were separate in a new and innovative way.

 CITY SQUARE:

A flexible public space designed to stage the diverse activities of the city.  Linked to the harbour side it serves as a gateway to engage with the  waters in and around the city.

LIMITLESS COMPILATIONS

ENVIRONMENT

THE DEMANDS

Due to the constant growth of our cities, the demand for both public space and urban farming has increased.

Citizens of this millennia, find themselves having to sacrifice one for the other, in order to make way for communities’ priorities; whether that being the need for a public space to host different activities or the need for an urban farming space to promote local food production.

So, how can the built environment tailor for such demands?

Merging both programs within the confinements of the city would result in both, under-performing crops/space and inefficient yield maximization.

ENVIRONMENT

AQUA CULTURE

The equivalent of turning agriculture and crops upside down would be aquafarming.

Aquafarming consists of growing, kelp, seaweed, oysters, shellfish, to name a few. These help contribute to the overall growth of coral reefs and re-build the ecosystems that existed before we started to contaminate our harbour waters.

THE CLEAN TEAM

  A SMALL BIG CONTRIBUTION

These little guys filter out BIG volumes of of water that may be a potential threat to other organisms; such as excess nitrogen, a silent killer that is a by-product of sewage and industrial run-off.

2   40-50 GALLONS A DAY!

A typical market size oyster (3" from the longest dimension) filters about 40-50 gallons of water per DAY!

OUR OYSTER YIELD

1   ONE MODULE OYSTER YIELD

With an average vertical growing distance (water column) of 4 meters:

1 platform (2.5 M x 2.5 m) = 1350 kg yield = roughly 20,000 oysters

1 super structure (9 platforms) = 12,150 kg yield = 180,000 oysters

2   ONE MILLION OYSTERS

With only 5.5 superstructures we get 1,000,000 oysters!!!

ONE MILLION A DAY...

 A SMALL BIG CONTRIBUTION

1,000,000 oysters will filter 40 to 50 million gallons a DAY from our harbours, helping to rehabilitate its local ecosystems!

TO PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE 1 MILLION OYSTERS WILL FILTER 75.7 OLYMPIC SIZE POOLS IN ONE DAY.

1,000,000 A YEAR...

Central Park can take roughly about 4000 Olympic size pools, this means that in one year, ONE MILLION oysters will have cleaned an area 7 times the size of Central Park!

 ONE MILLION OYSTERS A YEAR

In one YEAR these little guys will have filtered more than 18 BILLION gallons of water, equivalent to almost 28,000 Olympic size pools!
